EVONIK as new main sponsor

Weiterstadt/Nürburg – For the first time, when Volvo tuner HEICO SPORTIV draws up to the starting line at this year’s 40th ADAC 24h Race at the Nürburgring and other selected VLN races, it will be doing so with bio-diesel in its tank. It will be powered by a five cylinder “D5” diesel engine. Chemical group Evonik Industries has become HEICO SPORTIV’s latest sponsor.

“We’re delighted to have gained chemical group Evonik as a new partner which is actively supporting the Green Racing comeback,” says HEICO SPORTIV General Manager, Holger Hedtke.

“With this, we’ll be continuing our tradition of using motorsports as the technological springboard from the racing circuit to the road and, not only that. To do it sustainably, too.”

Reduced CO2 emissions and maximum efficiency through bio-diesel
Evonik is one of the world’s preeminent specialized chemical companies. With its Advanced Intermediates business division, it is a leading supplier of the alcoholates used in producing bio-diesel. HEICO SPORTIV is using NExBTL from Neste Oil. Such a fuel is a prerequisite for starting in the “Alternative Fuels” class.

For many years, HEICO SPORTIV has acted an official partner Volvo Car Germany and Volvo Car Switzerland in the area of individualizing series-produced vehicles. Its core expertise includes power upgrades for all currently available engines. With HEICO SPORTIV’s ECU power upgrade (named “e.motion® ECU”) – the “D5” engine, for example, generates a hefty 240 hp (compared to the series-produced version’s 215 hp) and develops a maximum of 490 Nm (420 Nm) of torque. For the 2012 season’s racing edition of the Volvo C30 D5, some more will thrown in to boot. For the first time, the basis will be an engine that was specially designed by Volvo for competitions and then adapted by HEICO SPORIV for application in long-distance motorsports. The engine concerned is the five-cylinder “D5” blockbuster with 2.4 liter capacity. In its racing configuration, the engine generates around 300 hp and 600 Nm torque which are attained by comprehensive mechanical modifications and a new engine management system.

The power transmission is handled by a newly developed, sequential racing gearbox from Holinger which for the first time has been approved for torques of well over 600 Nm for front wheel drive vehicles.

The gearbox was developed specifically for the unique requirements for long-distance racing and perfectly tuned to the conditions of the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife. Furthermore, at around 50 kg, it weighs ca. 10% less than a series-production gearbox.

Technology partnerships with Castrol, Pirelli and the Technical University (TU) of Darmstadt
For many years, HEICO SPORTIV has been maintaining technology partnerships with Castrol and Pirelli, and been recommending and using their products. This tradition has been systematically continued in HEICO SPORTIV’s motorsport pursuits. On the Volvo C30 D5 racing car, Castrol is advertising its high-performance engine oil, Castrol EDGE, whose special formula protects the engine components against premature wear. Castrol EDGE also helps cut fuel consumption – a major competitive advantage in long-distance racing.

Tried and tested Pirelli slicks and wet-weather tires provide for optimal road holding characteristics. “Based on our experience from previous years, we decided to go for the Pirelli 245/645-18 P Zero in 2012,” explains Michael Blaufuss from Pirelli Germany. “Thanks to the different compounds in our tire mixtures, we can offer HEICO SPORTIV the optimal tire for any weather condition.”

In addition to further detail improvements in the braking system, aerodynamics and chassis, HEICO SPORTIV has also entered into a cooperation with the Institute for Internal Combustion Engines & Vehicle Propulsion of the Technical University of Darmstadt. The aims of this cooperation are to offer students, among others, the opportunity of a bachelor thesis and to further intensify data analysis at the racing circuit.

Experienced quartet at the wheel
With two of its own staff, Patrick Brenndörfer (Frankfurt) and Martin Müller (Griesheim) at the wheel, HEICO SPORTIV has for ten years already been placing its trust in its own employees’ driving skills.

The driver lineup for the 40th ADAC 24h Race (17th – 20th May) will be complemented by the current VLN leader, Ulli Andree (Cologne) and Nordschleife veteran, Frank Eickholt (Bottrop).

While the season’s undisputed highlight will be the “twice around the clock” marathon, HEICO SPORTIV will also be starting at other selected races in the framework of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship (VLN).
