HEICO SPORTIV resigns itself to breakdown at ADAC 24h Race at the Nürburgring. Volvo V40 D5’s specially developed motorsports gearbox prematurely gives up the ghost after just 30 laps.
“We’re devastated. Our appearance at this year’s ADAC 24h Race at the Nürburgring had, after all, the symbolic significance of duly celebrating our 20th jubilee”, said HEICO SPORTIV Managing Director, Holger Hedtke, after the race. “But we still have reason to be satisfied: our team configured a perfect vehicle and serviced and supported it professionally at the racetrack; what’s more, not a single HEICO SPORTIV or Volvo product failed the acid test.”
The racing weekend started according to plan for the Weiterstadt-based team. With a lap time of 10:20.674 minutes in qualifying, the proven driver trio consisting of Patrick Brenndörfer (Frankfurt), Martin Müller (Griesheim) and Frank Eickholt (Bottrop) secured 3rd place in the AT class for alternative fuels. The racing car supported by chemical group Evonik Industries is powered by R33 biofuel containing a specifically defined blend of raw materials. R33 corresponds to the DIN EN 590 industry standard for diesel fuel and can be used unreservedly in any diesel vehicle.
The race began promisingly: HEICO SPORTIV product developer, Müller, got off to a flying start and had already elbowed his way to second place in class during the first stretch. As the race proceeded, it drizzled on and off, making the choice of tires something of a lottery. Thanks to their extensive experience and a bit of luck, colleagues Brenndörfer and Eickholt chose the right Pirelli tires, consolidated their position, and gradually nudged their way forward in the overall classification. But after six hours and a distance of around 760 km, the Volvo suddenly lost power and ground to a halt.
The team succeeded in towing the sickly Volvo V40 D5 to the paddocks, but eventually had to declare defeat. “Unfortunately, what we were dealing with was a damaged gearbox which had just been upgraded by a third-party motorsports supplier. That’s Racing – the Nordschleife exacts its toll,” observed Martin Müller. “Nevertheless, we were able to offer our fans an awesome performance. We’d like to give our heartfelt thanks for the support.“
