In 1995, HEICO Motorsport made its debut with the Volvo 850 station wagon at the ADAC 24h Race at the Nürburgring. This season, 20 years on, HEICO SPORTIV will be competing in a Volvo again and recognizing the jubilee with a livery reminiscent of the original Volvo 850.
The legendary ADAC 24h Race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife is recognized as the toughest long-distance race for GT and touring cars worldwide. HEICO SPORTIV has been competing in the “Grüne Hölle” since 1995 and will be lining up this year under the slogan “20 Years’ HEICO Racing”. Today’s modern hatchback – which is based on the Volvo V40 D5 – pays homage to the original station-wagon racer’s livery. The car has a 2.4 liter, 5-cylinder biodiesel engine generating 300 hp and 600 Nm torque, as well as a sequential gearbox, paddleshift, and carbon-fiber doors and aprons.
Green Racing with innovative diesel fuel R33
HEICO SPORTIV has a tradition of using alternative fuels. Biodiesel is one of the fundamental pillars of tomorrow’s energy mix that will be critical for reaching Europe’s climate-protection goals. Chemical group Evonik supports the fireball with its R33 bio-fuel, which comprises a precisely defined raw-material mix consisting of 7% biodiesel, 26% hydrated plant oil and 67% diesel. R33 fulfills the DIN EN 590 industry standard for diesel fuels and can be used unrestrictedly in all diesel vehicles. Biodiesel is a requisite for competing in the “Alternative Fuels” (AT) category against the likes of Audi, BMW and VW.
Besides Evonik, other key technology partners with long cooperative histories include Castrol (with its engine oil Castrol EDGE) and Pirelli (for tires). Technical support comes from Bilstein, Eibach, Remus and the Technical University of Darmstadt’s Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Powertrain Systems (Institut für Verbrennungskraftmaschinen und Fahrzeugantriebe, VKM). Continuity is provided for at the steering wheel by HEICO SPORTIV’s own, in-house racing duo, Patrick Brenndörfer (Press and PR) and Martin Müller (product development). As in the past, they will be complemented by former HEICO SPORTIV employee and full-time driving instructor, Frank Eickholt.
“The use of alternative fuels, permanent improvements in technology and know-how, and the involvement of our partners and staff make our 20-year commitment to motorsports an indispensable part of our enterprise,” says HEICO SPORTIV Managing Director, Holger Hedtke. “In doing so, we always revert to standard Volvo vehicles and original parts from the Volvo and HEICO SPORTIV programs. In the most spectacular way possible, we squeeze maximum performance out of a true Volvo in competition, thereby demonstrating Volvo’s iconic brand qualities, such as durability and sustainability,” he continues.
The 2015 ADAC 24h Race will be starting Saturday, 16 May at 16:00h CET. HEICO SPORTIV will be posting regular updates to its Facebook site at www.facebook.com/heicosportivpage.
